N を V ます

「を」 is used with verbs that express action and indicates that N is the object of the action.

  • 切手を3 枚買います。
    きって を 3 まい かいます。
    I buy three stamps.
  • 何を食べますか。
    なに を たべます か。
    What will you eat?
  • 田中さんはコーラを飲みます。
    たなかさん は コーラ を のみます。
    Tanaka-san drinks cola.

「が」 indicates that N1 is the subject of the sentence.

    It snows a lot in winter.
  • わたしの部屋に電話があります。
    わたし の へや に でんわ が あります。
    There is a telephone in my room.
  • 歴史と数学がおもしろいです。
    れきし と すうがく が おもしろい です。
    History and mathematics are interesting to me.

「は」 indicates that N1 is the topic of the sentence and can be used for stating N in comparison to other things. 「は」 cannot be used with interrogatives, but can be used with other particles.

  • わたしは両親と住んでいますが、兄は一人で住んでいます。
    わたし は りょうしん と すんで います が、あに は ひとりで すんで います。
    I live with my parents, while my brother lives by himself.
  • わたしは犬が好きですが、猫が嫌いです。
    わたし は いぬ が すき ですが、ねこ が きらい です。
    I like dogs, but I don’t like cats.
  • 駅からは歩いて10分ぐらいです。
    えき から は あるいて 10ぷん ぐらい です。
    It takes 10 minutes on foot from the station.

    Kimura-san showed a picture of his/her family to their friend.
  • 山田先生は田中さんに本を貸しました。
    やまだ せんせい は たなかさん に ほん を かしました。
    Yamada-sensei lent Tanaka-san a book.
