Do the Gods Hold a Meeting Once a Year?

Japan has a mysterious and rather charming legend you might like to know.

In Shinto, gods are not believed to live only in special places. They exist in mountains, rivers, forests, the ocean, and even in the everyday places around us. There is a famous Japanese expression, yaoyorozu no kami (八百万の神), which refers to the countless gods and spirits believed to inhabit the world.

According to an old tradition, all of these gods gather once a year for a great meeting. This gathering takes place during the 10th month of the lunar calendar, which aligns around November on our modern calendar. The destination for this divine conference is the famous Izumo Taisha Shrine in Shimane Prefecture.

Because of this, this period is traditionally called "Kannazuki" (神無月) across most of Japan, which translates to "the month of no gods." However, in the Izumo region—where all the gods are gathering—it is called "Kamiarizuki" (神在月): "the month with gods."

So what do the gods discuss?
It is said that they consult on various matters for the upcoming year, such as human relationships, marriages, families, careers, good harvests, and business prosperity. The main deity worshipped at Izumo Taisha is Ōkuninushi, who is especially famous as a god of relationships and connections. Because of this, many people believe that the gods gather to discuss the bonds that will connect people in the year ahead.

Of course, this belongs to the world of myth and folklore. Yet even today, Izumo continues to observe ceremonies that welcome the gods upon their arrival and send them off when the gathering ends.

If the gods truly were holding a meeting right now, what do you think would be on the agenda? Global peace? Or perhaps a wonderful new connection waiting for you in the coming year?

Letting your imagination wander with stories like this is just one of the many joys of exploring Japanese culture.
