The Mindset of Receiving Hospitality

When we hear the word "Omotenashi," most of us immediately think of the host. We picture a warm welcome, meticulous attention to detail, and service that goes above and beyond expectations. These are certainly essential elements of Japanese hospitality.

However, there is another side of omotenashi that is not often discussed.
That is, the mindset of the person receiving hospitality.

For example, imagine a bakery offering free samples. The purpose of those samples is to allow customers to experience the flavor of the product. But what if one person were to take and eat all of them? In that case, the bakery’s kindness and careful preparation lose their purpose.

Hospitality cannot exist through the efforts of the provider alone.

Those who offer hospitality think deeply about the comfort and happiness of others. That is why it is equally important for the receiver to show consideration for the thoughtfulness, effort, and goodwill behind it.

  • Do not ask for more than necessary.
  • Think about others as well.
  • And most importantly, carry a sense of gratitude.

Sometimes, a simple “thank you” may be the greatest return for hospitality.

I believe Omotenashi is not a one-way act of service, but a relationship between people. One side offers sincere care, while the other receives it with understanding and appreciation. Only when both exist together can true hospitality be achieved.

The reason Japanese hospitality is admired around the world is not only because of the excellence of those who provide it. It is also because there is a culture of consideration among those who receive it. That mutual respect is what keeps the spirit of omotenashi alive.

We look forward to seeing you again in the next newsletter!
