Beyond Sightseeing: Finding the "Real Japan" in Everyday Life

The destinations tourists seek in Japan are changing. While in the past, temples, shrines, and iconic views of Mt. Fuji was popular, many international visitors are now heading to more "ordinary" destinations.

These include convenience stores (konbini), department store basements (depachika), local shopping streets (shotengai), underground malls, supermarkets, and food courts.

Convenience stores represent a perfected form of Japanese daily life. They’re clean, open 24/7, and offering surprisingly high-quality food. Visitors can enjoy not only onigiri and sandwiches, but also seasonal items and regional specialties. While convenience stores are just “useful shops” overseas, in Japan they’ve become a cultural experience.

Department store food basements, or depachika, are true “food theme parks” where the visual beauty, taste, and hospitality are world-class. It’s the most efficient way to experience Japan’s culinary excellence in one spot.

Local shopping streets (Shotengai) reflect the daily lives of Japanese people. Unlike massive malls, these are places where you can feel the local atmosphere and interact with shop owners. Here, tourists encounter the “real Japan.”

Underground malls offer a uniquely Japanese experience. Sheltered from the weather, with orderly shops and restaurants, they create the sense of an entire city beneath the city.

Supermarkets reveal Japanese daily dining habits. The quality of prepared foods (osazai), careful packaging, and thoughtfully curated selection all reflect the culture of everyday life.

Finally, food courts combine convenience and cleanliness, making them accessible for families and tourists alike. The ability to enjoy a wide variety of meals in one place also reflects Japan’s characteristic efficiency.

Why this shift?

Because travelers are moving from simply "viewing" Japan to "experiencing" it. And Japan’s everyday life has itself become a tourist attraction.

The strength of Japan lies in the fact that we don't always need to create something new or "special" for tourists. Instead, the value is found in how much we have refined our everyday life. What is "normal" to us is a world-class attraction to others.
