A Little-Known Way to Use Convenience Stores

Have you ever been on a business trip or out of the office and suddenly realized, “I need to print these documents right now”?

In Japan, situations like this are rarely a problem. The reason is simple: convenience store printers have an easy-to-use online system.

For example, convenience stores such as 7-Eleven have "multi-copy" machines. These are not just ordinary copiers. You can upload your data in advance from your computer or smartphone, receive a “print reservation number,” and then pick up your documents directly at the store.

The process is very simple.

First, upload your PDF, image, Word file, or other documents to the online service from your PC or smartphone. You’ll then receive a printing number. Next, go to a nearby convenience store and enter that number into the multi-copy machine. For just a few dozen yen, you can print your documents and have them in hand immediately.

What makes this system so impressive is that:

  • You don’t need to carry a printer
  • You don’t need a USB drive
  • Many stores are available 24 hours a day
  • The same basic operation works almost everywhere in Japan

There is one important point for those traveling to Japan from the United States. In Japan, the standard paper size is A4. In contrast, U.S. documents are generally “Letter” sized. If you print without checking the settings, the layout may shift, or it may cut off the top, bottom, and sides. When printing in Japan, I recommend converting your documents to A4 in advance or confirming the paper size when saving your PDF.

This service shows that Japanese convenience stores are more than just retail shops—they function as vital social infrastructure. For business travelers and professionals, it’s hard to find a system that is this efficient and reliable.

When I explain this to people overseas, they’re almost always surprised. I believe this kind of “everyday convenience” is one of Japan’s greatest strengths.
