Did You Know Japan Originally Had Only Four Colors?

Modern Japanese has many color words: aka (red), ao (blue), kiiro (yellow), midori (green), and many more. However, if we travel back to ancient times, the Japanese world was defined by just four primary colors: Red, Blue, White, and Black.

These weren't just simple labels for hues; they represented the very essence of how our ancestors perceived the world—balancing light, darkness, purity, and life.

  • Red (Aka): Brightness, warmth, and the presence of life.
  • Blue (Ao): Darkness, coolness, and stillness.
  • White (Shiro): Light, purity, and new beginnings.
  • Black (Kuro): Deep darkness and the shadowy unknown.

Because these four formed the foundation of color in Japanese, they remain special even today. In Japanese, these four colors are the only ones that can naturally function as true "i-adjectives":

  • Akai (Red)
  • Aoi (Blue)
  • Shiroi (White)
  • Kuroi (Black)

Other colors cannot be used this way. You can’t simply say “midori-i” or “ki-i.” Instead, Japanese uses expressions like:

  • Chairo (brown)
  • Kiiro (yellow)
  • Midori-iro (green)
  • Pinku (pink)

In other words, only red, blue, white, and black remain as “true color adjectives” in Japanese.

This may also explain a familiar curiosity, why Japanese people often refer to a green traffic light as “blue.” An older sense of color, preserved in language, may still be shaping how things are perceived today.

When we trace words back through time, we begin to see a culture’s worldview emerge.
Even something as simple as color carries the quiet breath of history within the Japanese language.
