When Do Bento Boxes Get Cheaper in Japan? — Supermarket and Department Store Food Hall “Discount Timings”

If you live in Japan, you might be surprised to learn there are specific times when you can buy pre-made meals (bento) and side dishes (souzai) for incredibly cheap prices at supermarkets and department store food halls. This is very useful not only for travelers but also for residents who want to save on daily expenses.

When Supermarket Bento Boxes Go on Sale

Most supermarkets start their markdowns around 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM.
By 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM, it’s common to see 20% to 50% off stickers on bento boxes and deli items. In many stores, the last hour or two before closing is the "Final Markdown period", when prices drop even further.

The Discount Time at Department Store Food Halls

Department store food halls (known as Depachika) offer higher quality, more gourmet food, but prices tend to be a bit higher. However, as closing time approaches, great deals begin to appear.
Many department stores generally start marking down items around 7:00 PM, and one hour before closing, you can often find significant discounts.
Since depachika are very popular and often crowded, popular items can sell out quickly.

Key Points to Remember

  • The discount time varies from location to location. If you visit a store a few times, you'll figure out its specific markdown timing.
  • Head to the deli section when you see staff starting to put out discount stickers. This is the best time to grab good items.
  • Perishable items like sushi and tempura may be completely sold out in the final minutes before the store closes.

Even while traveling, this "Discount Time" is a great way to enjoy Japanese food culture at a great price. Be sure to check out a supermarket or a Depachika in the evening. You're sure to find something delicious!

We’d love to hear your thoughts and feedback.
