The Three Verb Groups in Japanese

Japanese verbs are divided into three main groups, based on how they conjugate (change form).

【1】 Godan Verbs (五段動詞 – “Five-step verbs”)

Endings: Typically end in u, ku, gu, su, tsu, nu, bu, mu, ru, etc.

Conjugation: The final consonant changes through five vowel sounds: a–e–i–o–u.

Examples:
- 書く (kaku) 'to write' → kakanai / kakimasu / kakeba / kakō
- 行く (iku) 'to go' → ikanai / ikimasu / ikeba / ikō

Key Feature: The verb stem changes (e.g., ik + u/i/a etc.).

These verbs make up the majority of all Japanese verbs.

【2】 Upper Ichidan (上一段動詞)

Endings: Consist of an 'i' vowel sound + る (ru) (e.g., miru, okiru).

Conjugation: The stem never changes; only the ending る (ru) changes.

Examples:
- 見る (miru) 'to see' → minai / mimasu / mireba / miyō
- 起きる (okiru) 'to wake up' → okinai / okimasu / okireba / okiyō

Key Feature: The verb stem is constant and doesn’t change.

Origin of Name: “い段 (i-row)” refers to the upper row of the Japanese vowel chart → hence “Upper Ichidan Verbs.”

【3】 Shimo Ichidan Verbs (Group 2 / Lower Ichidan / Vowel-Stem Verbs)

Endings: Consist of an 'e' vowel sound + る (ru) (e.g., taberu, kaeru).

Conjugation: Similar to Kami Ichidan, the stem stays the same and only る (ru) changes.

Examples:
- 食べる (taberu) 'to eat' → tabenai / tabemasu / tabereba / tabeyō
- 変える (kaeru) 'to change' → kaenai / kaemasu / kaereba / kaeyō

Key Feature: The verb stem does not change.

Origin of Name: “え段 (e-row)” refers to the lower row of the Japanese vowel chart → hence “Lower Ichidan Verbs.”

Summary Points

  • Godan Verbs: The verb stem changes (e.g., iku → ika, iki, ike, ikō).
  • Ichidan Verbs: The verb stem does not change (miru → mi, taberu → tabe).
  • The difference between Upper and Lower Ichidan is simply whether the vowel in the stem ends with an 'i' sound (Upper) or an 'e' sound (Lower).

Final Note

Over the past three weeks, we’ve been explaining how Japanese verb conjugation works. But in reality, even native Japanese speakers rarely think consciously about these conjugation patterns when speaking..

Most people don't understand the conjugation rules before speaking; instead, they naturally acquire the feel for which form to use in which situation through daily use.

Therefore, don't worry if you can't immediately understand all of this. What really matters is using many verbs and gradually feeling how their meanings change through conjugation. That’s the key to truly mastering Japanese.

We’d love to hear your thoughts and feedback! See you in the next Japanese-Online Newsletter.
