Blood Type Personality Test: A Common Conversation Topic in Japan

In Japan, it's very common for people to talk about the blood type personality test. People often ask, “What’s your blood type?” and depending on the answer, the conversation continues with comments like, “I knew you were type A,” or “You're so easygoing because you’re type B.”

Statistically, A is the most common blood type in Japan at around 40%, followed by O at 30%, B at 20%, and AB at 10%. As a result, people tend to mention type A personality traits most often.

Generally, the personality traits for each blood type are as follows:
  • Type A: Well organized, hard working, responsible, and someone who values harmony.
  • Type O: Easygoing, social, and someone with strong leadership skills.
  • Type B: Free-spirited, curious, unique, and someone who goes at their own pace.
  • Type AB: Cool and logical, emotional at times, and creative.
Of course, there isn’t any scientific evidence to support these ideas, but in Japan, this topic often serves as an icebreaker to ease conversations.

So, how about in the United States? In fact, many Americans don’t know their own blood type. They don't have opportunities to find out unless they get a medical test. So, if you ask someone, "What's your blood type?", many people won't know the answer.

It's interesting how a simple topic like "blood type" can lead to such different conversations in Japan and the U.S., depending on the culture.
