What Are Japanese Particles?

To truly understand Japanese, it’s essential to understand particles. Particles (joshi) are small words following nouns and verbs to show their role in a sentence and how they relate to other words. Particles let us understand who did what, where, how, and so on. Even a single character can completely change a sentence’s meaning, so be sure to learn them well.

1. は (wa) – Indicates the topic (theme)

Marks the topic or the main subject of the sentence.
※ Written as “は” but pronounced “wa.”
Example: わたしは学生です。
Watashi wa gakusei desu. (I am a student.)
→ “Watashi (I)” is the topic of the sentence.

2. が (ga) – Indicates the subject or emphasizes a specific element
