Japanese Online Newsletter Vol...

例(れい):

Casual Japanese (Tameguchi)

Have you ever heard the word, Tameguchi in Japanese?
In Japanese culture, people speak differently depending on their relationship with others, social hierarchy, and situation. Tameguchi is one way of speaking in Japanese; learning about it is a fascinating aspect of the language and culture.

What Does “Tameguchi” Mean?

Tameguchi refers to casual or informal speech that doesn’t use honorific language (Keigo). The word tame originally means “same number,” so you’d use tameguchi when talking to someone of equal standing. In business settings, using tameguchi is generally considered inappropriate, even if you become close to them.

Examples:

  • “Ohayou” → In polite form: “Ohayou gozaimasu” (Good morning)
  • “Nani shiteru no?” → In polite form: “Nani wo nasatte irun desu ka?” (What are you doing?)

When Do You Use Tameguchi?

You typically use tameguchi in the following situations:

  • With close friends or classmates
  • With family (though not usually with elders)
  • With people younger than you
  • With long-time acquaintances (while still being respectful)

When to Be Careful

In Japan, using tameguchi with someone older than you or someone you’ve just met could be considered rude. Using honorific language in especially formal or business situations is common. For Japanese learners, it's crucial to know when to use certain types of speech.

Tameguchi is a casual and friendly way of speaking commonly used among friends. However, judging the right time and person before using it is vital. Even if you start to feel closer to someone, it’s often best to wait before switching to tameguchi, and to remain respectful in your communication.
