日本(にほん)のお金(かね)の数(かぞ)え方(かた)を聞(き)いたことがありますか。例(たと)えば、英語(えいご)ではお金(かね)を千単位(せんたんい)で数(かぞ)えることがあります。例(たと)えば$1,000はOne thousand dollars、$10,000はTen thousand dollars と言(い)いますよね。$100,000はOne hundred thousand dollars で、次(つぎ)の位(くらい)からMillion dollars と言(い)います。

では日本語(にほんご)ではどう言(い)うのでしょうか。1,000円(えん)は「せんえん」、10,000円(えん)は「じゅうせんえん」ではなく、「いちまんえん」と言(い)います。100,000円(えん)は「じゅうまんえん」になり、1,000,000円(えん)は「ひゃくまんえん」になるのです。

英語(えいご)は千(せん)の単位(たんい)で区切(くぎ)りますが、日本語(にほんご)では万(まん)の単位(たんい)で区切(くぎ)るのです。従(したが)って$128,000は、One hundred twenty eight thousand dollars ですが、128,000円(えん)は「じゅうにまんはっせんえん」になります。

米国(べいこく)では$1.00の下(した)にもっと細(こま)かなセントというお金(かね)の単位(たんい)がありますが、日本(にほん)では1円(えん)が一番(いちばん)小(ちい)さな通貨(つうか)です。日本円(にほんえん)の約(やく)110円(えん)が米国(べいこく)の＄1と同(おな)じ価値(かち)ですので、アメリカ人(じん)が日本(にほん)に行(い)くと数字(すうじ)の単位(たんい)が大(おお)きくて何(なん)でも高(たか)く感(かん)じるかもしれませんが、そんな時(とき)は最後(さいご)の2桁(けた)を無(な)くしてみると大体(だいたい)の金額(きんがく)が分(わ)かると思(おも)います。




Have you ever heard how money is counted in Japan? For example, in English, money is sometimes counted in thousands. For example, $1,000 is called one thousand dollars, and $10,000 is called ten thousand dollars and the next being one million dollars.

So how is this done in Japanese? 1,000 yen is called "sen'en," 10,000 yen is called "ichiman'en," not "jusen'en." 100,000 yen becomes "juman'en," and 1,000,000 yen becomes "hyakuman'en."

In English, we use one thousand units, but in Japanese, we use ten thousand units. So $128,000 is one hundred and twenty-eight thousand dollars, but 128,000 yen is juni-man-hatsusen-yen.

In the U.S., there is a finer unit of currency called the cent which is below $1.00. However, in Japan, one yen is the smallest currency.
